Green Paper “Building a Capital Markets Union”

Integration of European capital markets moves on

On 18th February 2015, the European Commission published a Green Paper on building a Capital Markets Union. The Green Paper aims to create a deeper and more integrated capital market and to enhance the flow of capital. Institutional investors and asset managers shall be encouraged to provide more long term capital to the economy. This would complement the banking sector by offering companies additional ways of financing themselves.

According to the plans by the European Commission the Capital Markets Union will be set up gradually and should be fully in place by 2019. Apart from short-term initiatives, the Green Paper also describes medium to long-term actions to further integrate the existing capital markets.

The German Insurance Association generally welcomes the initiative undertaken by the European Commission. For a more detailed view on the insurance industry’s assessment, please also see the complete comments in the download section.
